UC Merced HSA hosts an annual Educational Conference here at UC Merced. It is conference where high school students can come to gain more information about pursuing higher education. As a minority group, there are still many incoming first generation Hmong American college students. The members of the club recognize the roadblocks that come with being first generation because many members have crossed those roadblocks before. The purpose of this conference is to build a space where students of all background can gather to better understand the system of higher education. In this conference, we host workshops in all fields such as the medical field where we bring in Hmong professionals who work in the field. There are also workshops about mental health, financial aid, and more. In the workshops, presenters are encouraged to engage with the audience and share their expertise with the high school students in hopes of helping them choose their careers. Throughout the conference, students also engage in activities which are intended to help them navigate through the Hmong and American cultures while finding their sole identity. Many friendships and mentor/mentee relationships have been formed through this conference. EdCon happens every November and applications will be open in October.
EdCon 2019 Applications are now open!
Mentee applications are for high school students who wish to partake in our Educational Conference. Our conference will be held from November 9 to November 11th at UC Merced. We provide workshops to prepare students for higher education. We recognize that higher education is a struggle for many first generation students; they have no one to rely on when it comes to college. At this conference, HSA will provide a mentor-mentee relationship for high school students so guide them through the perils of higher education. By sharing our time and goals, everyone will bond and hopefully grow their HSA family. Mentees will be asked to fill out the form and they will be notified with more information by the end of October. Mentee applications will be closed on October 18th, 2019.
In order to host and execute such a large event, we need volunteers to prep our meals, pick up food, transport materials or other miscellaneous tasks. Our volunteers are vital to running an event like this and we love our volunteers for doing what they do for us. If you missed the deadline to be a mentor or feel that a volunteer position is better suited for you, please fill out the form and we will contact you with more information!
